Before you want to play a guitar, you first need to purchase one. The main decision is pretty much split between electric guitars and acoustics. Many people like starting off on acoustics because they don’t require an amp. However, many others prefer electrics, because the consensus is that they are easier to play. You could also make the decision based on your musical preference, whether it be folk or metal.
It’s assumed that must first time students will not put much thought into picking out strings. This is understandable since the difference in choices are barely detectable to the human eye. However, choosing a lighter gauge set of strings over a heavier gauge will do wonders on your fingers as you first start to play. So, pick a few chords and practice them over and over until you’ve gotten them down. Three popular choices are G, C, and D. It shouldn’t take that long to learn those and once you do, you’ll be able to translate them into dozens of songs.
After having learned all the notes and a few chords, it’s time to pick out a couple of songs and start practicing. The key is to find tunes that you enjoy and it won’t feel like practice at all. It will feel like you’re well on your way to being a rock star. Pretty soon, you’ll have mastered those chords and can move on to some new ones.
It’s hard to imagine a world where learning to play guitar is not a teenager’s rite of passage. Although many people are intimidated by the sheer genius of some guitarists, there is simply no excuse not to learn the basics. They are very easy and even if you’re not immediately ripping into amazing solos, the ability to play even a few chords can be a very rewarding experience.
